Field Hydrogeology

As with the earlier editions, this book is a hands-on guide to field methods in
hydrogeology explaining what techniques are needed, how to carry them out
and why they are done that way. Advice is also provided on how to process
and interpret the data. A description of drilling and down-hole geophysics
methods has been included for the first time to assist those hydrogeologists
who are required to supervise the specialist contractors that normally undertake
this work, and also to interpret the resulting data.

This third edition
updates the information on the most recent field methods and the opportunity
has been taken to return it to the Field Guide format. The layout is designed
to mirror the logical sequence for the development of a conceptual model to
understand the hydrogeology of an area, with the associated hydrogeological
field studies needed to validate that understanding. In this edition four new
case histories have been included to illustrate how field measurements are
interpreted and the inter-relationships between different aspects of groundwater
systems. The practical approach also includes suggestions on improvising
measurements when specialist equipment is not available. Although the book
is primarily aimed at graduate and undergraduate earth science students, earlier
editions have also proved useful to many others. Therefore, this edition
includes guidance on how to apply the field methods to a number of common
applications, ranging from the development of new sources and identifying
both the sustainable yield and potential environmental impacts to investigating
the hydrogeology of features as diverse as wetlands and new cemeteries. The
underlying theme of the book continues to be the fundamental importance
of the geology of an area in trying to understand its hydrogeology, and the
significance of field observations in developing this understanding. Both are
essential for reliable hydrogeological interpretation, so make sure that they
are always part of your work.
